John-Paul Wallace

John-Paul learnt chess at the age of seven and a half and quickly took to the game. His passion for chess, together with his hunger to win, enabled him to defeat Grandmasters from the age of 14. He is the youngest player ever win the Australian Championship, which he did at age 17. He considers his greatest strengths his ability to ‘learn; and learn to learn’ and his determination – the desire to maintain concentration over how ever many hours it takes.

As a coach John-Paul first seeks to understand his student, what the student  wants and needs from the lessons and what his or her natural tendencies are. Thus every lesson is unique, as what is important for a young child, a budding junior or an adult that enjoys the occasional game may be very different. John-Paul firmly believes in the Wallace Chess philosophy that an enjoyable learning environment creates the best results, and like his team members at Wallace Chess he seeks to inspire his students rather than purely instruct. After all, a student with a love for chess will happily delve into the challenge of exploring its infinite complexity.
