Rookies Sunday Chess Coaching
The Rookies is designed to provide a high level of coaching for children, and in this way it is slightly different than the Holiday Camps in that we can go into more detail with the children on specific chess strategies and tactics, building both their knowledge and skill.
That said, the Wallace Chess belief is that the best learning occurs when the students are enjoying themselves, so we make sure that the classes are fun and light-hearted, and that the children have a chance to play some friendly games too.
Flexibility of attendance
We realise that Sunday is a busy day, so your child can simply attend on the dates that suit you.
We do ask that you register via phone or email by at least the Friday before hand so that we can prepare lecture material appropriate to who shall be attending. However, you can pay on the day.
Also, if your child can not make the whole session you can send your child for a half day. The first half (11am-1pm) is recommended where possible as there will be lunch break during the second half.
New Changes!
1) Open to all Levels
After feedback from parents and children, we will place A’s and B’s into one group, thus giving the children the opportunity to play and learn chess more regularly.
However they will be divided into smaller groups on the day, according to their ability. In this way they can receive the best coaching possible.
The two coaches will be John-Paul Wallace and Astrid Sund.
2) Certificates and Grading/Tests!
· Every time your child comes to his or her 8th session he/she will be tested on material that he/she has learnt over the past 7 sessions, and will receive a Certificate outlining what he/she has mastered the level he/she has attained. In this way children will have a concrete reminder and sense of achievement of what they have learnt to date as well as motivation to reach the next level of complexity.
· children will be tested according to their current strength and ability.
Thus a complete beginner may, for example, be awarded a certificate because they have learnt what the definition of checkmate and stalemate is, while an experienced junior may be tested on, for example, his mastery of the ‘Kings Indian defence’
Children attending only half a day will still be graded on their 8th session.
3) New Price System – including Sibling Discount
As usual the Rookies costs £60/day and will run at the normal time 11am-3pm at the Swiss Cottage Community Centre.
If your child can not make the full day, it is possible to come for half a day. As there is a lunch break in the second half of the day, the price is lower then. Thus:
11am-3pm = £60
11am-1pm = £40
1pm-3pm = £30
If you have more than 2 children please let us know.
4) Pre-Payment Discount Options – 7 session cards and Yearly cards
This Autumn we are introducing the option to pay in advance for a block of sessions in order to receive a discount. Cards can be purchased in advance or on the day.
With the 7 session card, you pay in advance for 7 sessions in which case you then receive the 8th session free of charge. You can use these purchased sessions within 6 months from your child’s first session.
The Yearly Card is when you pay in advance for 21 sessions, in which case you receive 5 sessions free. That equates to 26 sessions at a discount of almost 20%. You can use these sessions within 18 months from the date of purchase/your child’s first session.
You may purchase cards for any of the time slots, and the Sibling Discount still applies.
Sibling Discount = 10% off the total for 2 children, 15% off the total for 3 children
Dates
All of the dates of the Rookies will be under ‘Calendar of Events’ and are Sundays 11am-3pm.
There may be additional dates organised, in which case you will be informed via email.
